What Is a Drip Edge?
A drip edge is a narrow strip of metal installed along the edges of a roof, typically where the roof meets the fascia board. Its main purpose is to direct water away from the fascia and into your gutter system, keeping water from seeping under roofing materials or behind the fascia.
At Bham Roofs, we’ve inspected thousands of homes across Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, and Shelby County where missing drip edge caused avoidable soffit and fascia damage. In almost every case, a simple drip edge would have prevented costly repairs.
Why Is a Drip Edge Important?
Water ProtectionDrip edge channels water away from roof edges, preventing fascia rot, roof deck damage, and water infiltration into soffits.
Edge ProtectionIt serves as a barrier against wind-driven rain, ice dams, and stormwater runoff, extending the overall lifespan of your roof.
Pest Prevention Small gaps along the roofline are an open invitation for insects, squirrels, or birds. A properly installed drip edge helps keep them out.

How Drip Edge Is Installed
Drip edge is typically installed during a roof replacement or new construction. Here’s how the process works:
PreparationRoof deck and fascia are cleared of debris. Overhanging materials are trimmed. At Bham Roofs, we typically install drip edge over the felt underlayment so it remains visible for inspection.
In colder regions or low-slope areas, drip edge may be installed with ice & water shield over the top for added protection.
PositioningDrip edge is placed along both eaves (lower edges) and gables (sloped edges), extending slightly past the roof edge and snug against the fascia.
Each piece overlaps the next by at least 2 inches for proper water flow.
FasteningNailed every 8–10 inches, usually with 1 ¼″ roofing nails or 1″ felt tabs, ensuring it stays secure during Alabama’s high-wind storms and heavy rains.
Maintenance Tips for Drip Edges
To keep your drip edge performing properly:
Inspect Regularly – Look for loose nails, bent metal, or gaps.
Keep Gutters Clean – Debris buildup blocks water flow from drip edge to gutter.
Repair Promptly – If you see water stains, rot, or pest activity, address it immediately before it spreads.
Do You Need Drip Edge on Your Roof?
Yes — in fact, most Alabama building codes now require drip edge during roof installation. Even if your home doesn’t currently have it, adding drip edge during your next roof replacement is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your fascia, soffits, and roof deck from long-term damage.
