Roof Leak Detection & Repair ⭐
A roof leak is one of the most common reasons homeowners contact us, but finding the source isn't always as simple as looking directly above the water stain. Over the years, Birmingham Roofs has repaired thousands of roof leaks throughout Birmingham and Central Alabama, and we've learned that every leak tells a different story.
One of the biggest misconceptions about roof leaks is that they always show up as a water stain on the ceiling. In reality, many leaks remain hidden for months or even years before they're discovered. Water often follows roof decking, rafters, wall framing, insulation, or other building materials before finally becoming visible inside the home. By the time a stain appears on the ceiling, the leak may have already caused damage to roof decking, rafters, wall framing, soffits, fascia boards, or even exterior trim.
This is one reason we recommend having a roof inspected as soon as you suspect a problem. Finding a leak early is almost always less expensive than repairing structural damage after years of unnoticed water intrusion.
Roof Leaks Don't Always Appear Directly Below the Problem
Water rarely travels straight down.
A leak near a chimney may appear several feet away inside the home. Water entering around a plumbing vent can travel along the roof decking before dripping into an entirely different room. We've seen leaks that entered near the ridge of the roof but didn't become visible until they reached an exterior wall several feet away.
Because of this, properly diagnosing a roof leak requires experience—not guesswork. Our goal is to locate the actual entry point instead of simply repairing the area where the water became visible inside.
Plumbing Vent Boot Leaks
If your ceiling is leaking near a bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen, there's a good chance the plumbing vent boot is the culprit.
Plumbing vent boots are one of the most common roofing repairs we perform. Most vent boots use a neoprene or rubber collar that seals tightly around the vent pipe. Over time, constant exposure to Alabama's heat and UV rays causes the rubber to dry out, crack, or separate from the pipe.
If caught early, some vent boots can be repaired with a professional-grade roofing sealant. In other situations, replacing the entire plumbing boot is the better long-term solution. We inspect the condition of the flashing, surrounding shingles, and the vent pipe itself before recommending the appropriate repair.
Chimney & Wall Flashing Leaks
Chimneys are another extremely common source of roof leaks.
We've found many chimneys where the original flashing was left in place through multiple roof replacements. While the shingles may be new, aging flashing or deteriorated sealant can eventually allow water behind the system.
Leaks may develop because of:

Rusted step flashing
Improper flashing installation
Missing kick-out flashing
Flashing buried beneath multiple roofing layers
Whenever possible, we repair or replace the flashing system instead of relying solely on roof cement or excessive caulking. A properly installed flashing system should direct water away from the roof rather than depending on sealants alone.
Nail Pop Roof Leaks
Some roof leaks only occur during heavy, wind-driven rain or long periods of steady rainfall. In many cases, the cause is something surprisingly small—a nail pop.
Nail pops develop as seasonal expansion and contraction of the roof framing gradually push roofing nails upward through the shingles. Heat from the attic and natural movement of the home can slowly lift the nail enough to create a small opening where water can enter.
Rather than simply hammering the nail back down, we generally recommend removing the nail completely and installing a new fastener in solid decking. When possible, we also replace the affected shingle to restore the roof's water-shedding ability.
Valley Leaks
Roof valleys handle more water than almost any other part of the roof. Because multiple roof sections drain into the same area, valleys are especially vulnerable to leaks if they're installed incorrectly.
Common valley problems include damaged shingles, exposed fasteners, deteriorated underlayment, debris buildup, and improper flashing installation. We inspect both the visible roofing materials and the underlying waterproofing system to determine the true cause of the leak.
Skylight Leaks

Not every skylight leak is caused by the skylight itself. In many cases, the surrounding flashing system or roofing materials have failed.
Our inspection includes the skylight frame, flashing, surrounding shingles, and nearby roof penetrations to determine whether the skylight needs repair or if the leak is coming from another area of the roof.
If the skylight itself has reached the end of its service life, we typically recommend replacing it with a new skylight of similar size along with a complete new flashing system to ensure a watertight installation. For homeowners who no longer want a skylight, we can also permanently frame in the opening and install new roof decking and shingles to match the existing roof whenever possible.
